surf.co.nz catches up with the new NZ Open Mens Champ... Billy Stairmand

19th Jan 2014

surf.co.nz caught up with Billy Stairmand after his succesful final win in the 2014 NZ Surfing Nationals;

Billy, 2014 National Champ, how does it feel mate?

“Yea it feels so good to be National Champ! The funny thing is, since I first won my title in Gisy in 2010 I’ve won every second year. It feels good to be back in Gisy because I got my first title here and all the guys in the final are amazing surfers. It was definitely the gnarliest final I’ve ever had in New Zealand!”

Yea that final could have been a QS final?

“Yea it could have been. Maz has obviously been on tour, Jay was pretty much on tour and Bobby did the QS for years and did well; so it was pretty much the best surfers in New Zealand. I was just stoked to be in the final in Gisy with all of those guys. I just had fun out there.”

Does winning the Nationals feel as good as winning an overseas event?

“Yea it’s the start of the season so it feels so good to do well and start the year off with a win at home.  Obviously the QS is pretty massive and recognised internationally, but the Nationals is a big deal here and it means a lot to me. It’s also really cool to win in front of everyone in New Zealand who support you, so its sick!”

Whats the plan for the rest of the year?

“Just a full QS year for me this year for me. I go to Ausy on the 29thof this month to do a QS at Kirra then I’m working my way down to the Ausy Open, then onto the rest of the events after that”

Whats the plan for tonight?

“Just a chilled night for me tonight. I’m going to prize giving  now, but I haven’t been home in two weeks so Im going to go there straight after the prize giving. It will be cool to hang with family and friends”

Good on ya Billy!! Thanks for the chat.

“No worries bro yeww”

One question not asked, was about the equipment Billy rode to success; he opted to rely on his new 5'7" x 18 1/2" x 2 3/16" EPS ZORKN with FCS II Reactor fins for the entire week:
